In the Arcades Project, Walter Benjamin proposes an innovative theory of history while plunging us into the milieu of the nineteenth century Paris arcades, precursors to the shopping malls of today. Jean Luc Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinéma, a monumental four-and-a-half hour video series, explores the history of, and history through, cinema. Like the Arcades Project, it utilizes an intricately layered structure of montage and citation, and presents us with a novel and concrete approach to historiography. Whereas the Arcades Project is a study of the nineteenth century, Godard’s video focuses on the twentieth. In many ways, Histoire(s) is to the twentieth century, what the Arcades Project is to the nineteenth.

Among his films are Luminosity / Porosity, based on the work of architect Steven Hall; Elevator Moods, featured in the Sundance Film Festival. He also has training in contemporary philosophy, having studied the philosophy of art intensively with Jacque Derrida and Jean-Francois Lyotard. Associate Professor, Media Studies, Critical and Visual Studies, Organizing Committee for the Media Studies M.A. Program, Pratt Insitute (M.F.A., Film, NYU; Maîtrise, Philosophy, University of Paris VIII). Ethan Spigland received an M.F.A. from the Graduate Film Program at New York University, and a maîtrise from the University of Paris VIII under the supervision of Jean-François Lyotard and Gilles Deleuze.
