Matthew Rana, artista y escritor, presenta una lectura en inglés de su trabajo reciente, The Essayist, un poema de 30 páginas escrito desde la perspectiva de un gato doméstico rebelde. The Essayist demarca un intento de repensar y conectar varias líneas teóricas dentro de la historia de la izquierda política incluyendo el Constructivismo Ruso, Autonomismo, la primavera árabe, Jacques Derrida y el cine de Chris Marker. Como una manera de pensar las economías del discurso, también considera que posiciones discursivas deben ser construídas para poder hablar sobre el presente, trazando líneas paralelas entre el “hacer arte políticamente” y el antiguo problema de la poesía política.

Artist and writer Matthew Rana presents a reading in English, of his recent work The Essayist, a book-length poem written from the perspective of a rebellious house-cat. The Essayist marks an attempt to think-through and connect various theoretical strands within the history of leftist politics including Russian Constructivism, Operaismo, the Arab Spring, Jacques Derrida, and the films of Chris.Marker. As a way to consider the political economy of speech, it also asks what speaking positions must be constructed in order to speak about the present, drawing parallels between the call to “make art politically,” and the age-old problem of the political poem.

Matthew Rana (b. 1981 US/PK) is an artist and writer whose work involves issues surrounding speech-acts and the politics of language. His projects have been shown in multiple venues in the United States as well as in France, Sweden and Italy. A member of the art group Speech and What Archive, Matthew is also a regular contributor to the online journal Art Practical. He holds an MFA in Social Practice and an MA in Visual & Critical Studies from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and is currently a participant in the Independent Study Course at the Valand School of Fine Arts in Göteborg, Sweden.

Una conversación informal con Matthew Rana, artista y escritor, sobre su obra.

Matthew Rana (US/PK b.1981) es una artista y escritor cuyas investigaciones consideran problemáticas representacionales e históricas a través de nociones de performatividad. Algunos proyectos recientes incluyen: “Script for a Dead Comedian” (2010), un disco de 45 de una rutina de comedia escrita para Lenny Bruce y “The Gondolier’s Song”, (2008) una pieza de piano tocada para Gondoleros. Matthew contribuye a la revista cibernética Art Practical y sus textos han sido incluidos en las publicaciones There is No Two Without Three, y Afterwords: Texts on Voice. Obtuvo su MFA/MA en el programa de Social Practice y Visual & Critical Studies de California College of the Arts y está cursando como participante un año en el programa de estudios independientes de Valand School of Fine Arts en Gothenburg, Sweden.
